the 49er

The Olympic dinghy

Born in Australia and rigorously tested on Lake Garda, the 49er was approved for the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.

This boat class designed by Julian Bethwaite is made for racing. With its epoxy resin hull measuring precisely 4.99m, the 49er is a very fast sailboat with a planing hull, it reaches exceptional speeds (over 20 knots). However this makes the boat extremely unstable. It is equipped with wings and trapezes that allow the crew to create a maximum of counterweight and to balance the boat.
It requires great agility and speed from its crew.

The crew is made up of two navigators:

  • The helm, in charge of direction and tactical decisions.

  • The crew , who controls the sails.
